Thermal Printer Billing From a Phone or a Computer

A thermal printer and an Android phone are a complete billing counter for under five thousand rupees — no computer, no cable to a desktop, no software licence. MaterialBill prints to 80mm and 58mm rolls over USB or Bluetooth, and produces the A4 GST invoice from the same bill when a buyer needs one.

80mm or 58mm, and which to buy

The 80mm roll is the standard counter width and fits a readable item description, quantity, rate and amount in columns. The 58mm is narrower, cheaper on consumables and fine for a shop selling a few items per bill, but descriptions wrap and a long material name becomes two lines. For a hardware or general store where bills run to ten or fifteen lines, 80mm is worth the small extra cost. Both print from the phone over Bluetooth or from a computer over USB.

Receipt and invoice from the same bill

A thermal receipt is not a GST invoice — it is a counter acknowledgement, and for most walk-in sales that is exactly what is wanted. But a contractor buying eight tons of steel needs a proper A4 invoice with HSN codes, line-wise tax and your terms. In MaterialBill the same bill produces both: print the roll for the counter, share the A4 PDF on WhatsApp for the buyer who needs it. There is no separate document to create and no chance of the two disagreeing.

Getting a printer working

Bluetooth printers pair with the phone the way any Bluetooth device does, and are then selected once in the app. USB printers connect to the computer and print from the browser. Most standard ESC/POS printers on the Indian market work without any configuration, and our team will get yours running during the setup call. The common problems are a printer set to the wrong roll width in its own settings, or paper loaded the wrong way up, both of which take a minute to fix.

What to put on the roll

Your shop name, address, phone number and GSTIN print at the top, and a UPI QR can print at the bottom so the customer pays from the receipt in their hand. Keep the rest short — a roll is not the place for terms and conditions. Where you want a customer to have the full document, share the PDF; the roll is for the person walking out of the shop with a bag, and it should be readable at a glance.
