MaterialBill vs Tally — What Suits a Shop Counter?

TallyPrime is accounting software, and it is the best in class for chartered accountants and larger businesses. Running it at a shop counter is overkill: it takes weeks to learn, it does not run on a phone and the licence is expensive. MaterialBill is built for the shop — sign up today, bill today.

Accounting software and shop software solve different problems

A full accounting package exists to produce books — journals, ledgers, statutory reports, the things an accountant works with. Shop software exists to record what happens at a counter and in a godown. Most shops we speak to bought accounting software, used the billing and inventory parts, left the rest untouched, and had their CA do the books anyway. If that describes you, the question is not which is better but which one you are actually going to use.

Who is going to sit in front of it

This decides more than any feature. The person on your counter has usually kept a paper register for years. A screen built around accounting concepts, in English, with a chart of accounts behind it, is where that person stops and the register quietly comes back out. Software that is abandoned by the staff is not cheaper than software that is used, whatever it cost. Ours is in Hindi, built around a working day rather than a ledger structure, and most counter staff are billing unaided after one session.

Installed on a machine, or in the cloud

Installed software runs in a power cut and keeps your data on your own computer, which feels safer and is usually not. Your entire trading history sits on one machine at the counter, exposed to theft, a failed disk and ransomware, and backed up only when somebody remembers. You also cannot bill from a site, and a second branch means a second installation. We answer the power-cut objection with an Android app that bills offline and syncs afterwards, while the data itself stays backed up in the cloud.

What you keep and what you give up

You give up double-entry journals, depreciation schedules, cost centres and statutory payroll. Your CA does those from the sales, purchase, stock and GST summaries this produces. What you gain is a system your staff will actually use, billing from a site, a second branch on the same account, and a setup measured in half an hour rather than weeks. For most shops that is the right trade; for a business that genuinely keeps its own books in-house it is not.

Side-by-side comparison

MaterialBillTally
What it is Billing and shop management Full accounting software
Time to learn About 30 minutes, with a simple interface in Hindi Weeks of training, and usually a dedicated operator
Billing from a mobile App and browser, from anywhere Desktop only, under licence
Multi-unit material billing Built in Possible, but the setup is complex
Credit ledger and WhatsApp reminders Built in Ledgers yes, no WhatsApp flow
Staff attendance and salary Built in A separate and more complex payroll module
Price Free plan plus affordable annual plans High one-time licence plus renewals
Depth of accounting for a CA Business-level reports Nothing matches Tally here
Our honest verdict: If you need books at a chartered accountant's level, keep Tally — but do the counter billing in MaterialBill; the two run happily side by side. If you only need to run the shop, MaterialBill on its own is enough.

Frequently asked questions

Can this replace full accounting software?
For a shop whose books are done by a CA, in most cases yes. It does not do double-entry journals, depreciation or statutory payroll and does not claim to.
Can I import from an installed package?
Yes. Export items, parties and outstanding balances; old bills stay in the old system for reference and the new ledger starts from today's correct figures.
What happens when the internet goes?
The Android app records bills, receipts and deliveries offline and syncs when the connection returns.
